JOHN Brotstabchen famously (or infamously) was evicted from Dadaism by Andre Breton for his overuse of a cod-French accent. He often lost his shoes, and once left a boot in an art gallery, prompting Marcel Duchamp to declare a conceptual revolution in art.

Once affectionately described as the known person most likely to get an ASBO (anti-social behaviour order), John died in 1993, with no surviving relatives or relations, and no ASBO. This was the last time that anything of real interest happened to him. In his own words he was ‘A kind man, A good man, A fine and wise and humble man to all creatures, good and small, pretty and rubbish.’
